Rapid global changes are all over us and we witness so-called revolution of data. These changes impose the challenges – to statisticians and to decision-makers as well. The both parties need to get adjusted to the new trends; for official statistics this means upgraded responsiveness, and for decision-makers this entails an increased necessity for contextualized/relevant, concise and adequately structured data.

Since reliable and widely accessible statistical data are prerequisite for the process of democratization, national statistical institutes have a key role in canalling information towards professional and all other users.

Statistics define the respective indicators, ensure their envisaged quality and standards, and thereby support the process of decision-making. Therefore, the role of modern official statistics moves from a passive data producer to an active participant in public life. For this reason, official statistics, equitably with all other participants, ought to take part in the process of defining the objectives, ensuring the adequate indicators and educating public at large. To this effect, indicators are regarded as an exquisite tool that assess the current trends, facilitate comparability and is useful in detecting various misbalances, and therefore anticipate future movements and trends.
