Mr. Miladin Kovačević, Director general and Ms. Mira Nikić, assistant director of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, in charge of development and international cooperation, took the part in webinar, organized by World Bank.

It was an internal World Bank webinar organized by the Community of Practice for Statistical Capacity Building, which is an informal network of WB project leaders and economists working on statistical projects around the world.

Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (SORS) presented to the World bank experts new developments emerged as the results of cooperation with the UNECE High-Level Group on Modernization of Official Statistics (HLG-MOS).

SORS, as a leader in the production of official statistical data on a national level, put a lot of effort in sharing its ideas through international conferences and meetings.

International cooperation is one of the key points of our strategic approach. Our staff are often the speakers and presenters at international meetings in different statistical domains and the members of the prominent international statistical bodies as well.

One of them is the UNECE High-Level Group on Modernization of Official Statistics (HLG-MOS), a spark for innovations in statistical production, gathering chief statisticians from all over the world.

Statistical organizations have faced significant changes to the operational environment in recent years. Declining cost of computing power and rapidly digitizing societies have created vast new opportunities for statistical production. But at same time demands have changed. Data users have come to expect easy access to granular, high frequency data across multiple platforms. This has created pressure for producers of official statistics to modernize legacy technology, upgrade skills and transform business practices. In 2010, a group of chief statisticians formed the High-Level Group on Modernization of Official Statistics (HLG-MOS) as a platform for working collaboratively on issues of statistical modernization. In this webinar, Steven Vale of the UNECE will give an introduction to the work of the HLG-MOS, and present some of the tools and frameworks developed over the years to help statistical organizations manage modernization initiatives. Mrs. Mira Nikic from the Statistical Office of Serbia and Mr. Joko Parmiyanto from Statistics Indonesia will give an overview of how they have applied some of the tools to transform statistical production processes in their respective organizations.
