Comparative overview of the number of population and households by censuses 1948–2022

The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia publishes the data on the total number of population and households according to the results of all nine censuses conducted in the Republic of Serbia after World War II (1948–2022). The data are presented by settlements, municipalities, cities, areas, and regions, according to the administrative and territorial distribution of the Republic of Serbia as of July 1, 2022.

Data on the population and households according to censuses from 1948 to 1981 refer to the entire territory of the Republic of Serbia, while the censuses in 1991, 2002, 2011 and 2022 do not contain data for AP Kosovo i Metohija. Namely, 1991 Census was boycotted by the majority of the Albanian population, while in 2002, 2011 and 2022, there were no conditions for conducting the census on the territory of the southern Serbian province. In 2011 Census, the coverage of the census units in the municipalities of Preševo and Bujanovac was reduced due to the boycott of the census by the majority of members of the Albanian national community, therefore, only data on the enumerated population in those municipalities were given.

Data on the number of population and households by census years are presented in accordance with the methodologies that were applied at the time of each census. Therefore, when analysing changes in the number of population and households, methodological and territorial changes that occurred from census to census, should be taken into account. More detailed methodological explanations are given in the dissemination database.
